Aquests espais sovint s\u2019adaptaven per incrementar-ne la capacitat i fer m\u00e9s rendible el viatge, sense modificar gaire l\u2019aspecte general de la nau. Quan el tr\u00e0fic va esdevenir il\u00b7legal, les condicions de la travessia encara van empitjorar. El trajecte durava entre dos i tres mesos, i es calcula que al voltant d\u2019un 15 % de les persones captives van morir durant el viatge transatl\u00e0ntic.<\/p>\n<p>Quan els vaixells arribaven als ports americans, els traficants venien les persones raptades a particulars, amb la intermediaci\u00f3 dels comerciants locals. A partir d\u2019aquell moment, eren esclavitzades i destinades a treballar en el servei dom\u00e8stic o, en el cas de Cuba i Puerto Rico, majorit\u00e0riament als cafetars i a les plantacions de sucre. A partir de 1821, quan el tr\u00e0fic es va il\u00b7legalitzar, els vaixells havien de desembarcar els captius africans d\u2019amagat, a les platges i manglars de Cuba i Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_5,3_5&#8243; El document descriu la venda de captius a bord. A\u00f1o de 1846.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Aquesta fragata va ser constru\u00efda a San Francisco (EUA) i inscrita al registre de l\u2019Havana el 1846. Per fer front al tr\u00e0fic il\u00b7legal, es va instaurar a Freetown, actual capital de Sierra Leone, un tribunal mixt hispano-brit\u00e0nic per jutjar els vaixells capturats mentre practicaven aquest comer\u00e7. L\u2019altre tribunal mixt hispano-brit\u00e0nic es va instal\u00b7lar a l\u2019Havana. I la marina brit\u00e0nica es va convertir en una aut\u00e8ntica policia de mar contra els vaixells que violaven la prohibici\u00f3. Tenia 90 peus d\u2019eslora, 23 de m\u00e0nega i 110 tones de registre. El seu primer capit\u00e0 va ser Gaspar Roig Llenas, nascut a Vilassar de Mar i establert a Barcelona. Els propietaris eren els indians Jaime Batey i Jos\u00e9 Rabasa, establerts al port cub\u00e0 de Matanzas.A finals de 1842, l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> va embarcar 256 persones comprades en una factoria de Gallinas, a l\u2019actual Sierra Leone. Tres mesos despr\u00e9s, en va desembarcar 186 a Matabajo, prop de la vila cubana de Guant\u00e1namo. La resta devien haver mort durant la travessia. Malgrat les den\u00fancies dels representants brit\u00e0nics a l\u2019illa, les autoritats militars espanyoles van fer la vista grossa, probablement a canvi d\u2019una gratificaci\u00f3. I l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> va poder lliurar la seva c\u00e0rrega als compradors.Per\u00f2 els brit\u00e0nics ja li tenien l\u2019ull posat. Des del 1821, el tr\u00e0fic de persones era il\u00b7legal, i els vaixells brit\u00e0nics s\u2019havien convertit en una aut\u00e8ntica policia marina antiesclavista. L\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> va ser un dels seus principals objectius. El 12 de gener de 1845, quan intentava entrar una altra vegada a Gallinas, l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> es va topar amb el vapor brit\u00e0nic Growler, encarregat de perseguir vaixells negrers a la costa africana. El tinent Lodwick, que comandava el vaixell, va fer baixar un bot per registrar el falutx. De sobte, quan el bot era a una dist\u00e0ncia de 30 iardes, l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> va obrir foc. Per\u00f2 gr\u00e0cies a un cop de vent que el va despla\u00e7ar, les bales van passar per damunt del bot. El tinent Lodwick va respondre amb 180 trets. En el tiroteig, hi van morir dos brit\u00e0nics i el tinent Lodwick i dos homes m\u00e9s van ser greument ferits. Les desc\u00e0rregues de l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> van deixar el bot amb sis rems menys i amb tan pocs homes en condicions, que no van tenir cap altre remei que marxar.<\/p>\n<p>A partir d\u2019aquell moment, l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> es va convertir en la presa m\u00e9s buscada pels oficials de marina brit\u00e0nics. En coneixem almenys sis persecucions: un cop pel vaixell Waterwitch, comandat pel capit\u00e0 Matson, un altre per una embarcaci\u00f3 dependent d\u2019aquest mateix vaixell, dos cops per l\u2019Iris,quan era comandat pel capit\u00e0 Tucker, un cop pel vapor Kite i novament pel vapor Growler. De totes aquestes persecucions, l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> va poder escapar.Finalment, el 24 de febrer de 1845, quan l\u2019<em>Urac\u00e1n<\/em> era capitanejat per Jaume Guardiola, de Sant Feliu de Gu\u00edxols, i mentre carregava persones comprades a una factoria de Whydah (l\u2019actual Ouidah, a Ben\u00edn), el vapor brit\u00e0nic Hydra el va detenir i abordar. Hi havia 70 esclaus a bord. Sabem el nom d\u2019algunes d\u2019aquestes persones: Loando, home de 24 anys; Yangee, dona de 21 anys; Samoo, nen de 9 anys; Sambah, nena de 10 anys; Mosungoo, dona de 28 anys; Jaree, jove de 19 anys.El tribunal de Sierra Leone va decretar la venda del vaixell en subhasta p\u00fablica i l\u2019alliberament de les persones raptades. Jos\u00e9 Vidal y Ribas, por el vapor crucero ingl\u00e9s Firefly, de 4 ca\u00f1ones, y de la fuerza de 220 caballos en la roda de Wydah a las 6 de la tarde del 27 de agosto de 1857.<br \/>La corbeta <em>Conchita<\/em>, juntament amb les goletes <em>Mariana i Fernando Poo<\/em>, era un dels tres vaixells de l\u2019empresa Vidal, Mustich &amp; Co., fundada el 1846 per Josep Vidal i Ribas (que arribaria a ser un dels comerciants m\u00e9s importants de Barcelona i vicepresident de la Junta de Comer\u00e7), Dom\u00e8nec Mustich (propietari de factories a Popo i Aghwey, a l\u2019actual Ben\u00edn), Carles Torrens i Miralda (empresari impulsor de l\u2019enllumenat de gas de Barcelona) i Esteve Gatell Padrinas (tamb\u00e9 dedicat al tr\u00e0fic de persones).<\/p>\n<p>La <em>Conchita<\/em> va sortir de Barcelona el 23 de desembre de 1856, patronejada pel capit\u00e0 Joaquim Roig i carregada amb aiguardent i barrils buits. La primera parada va ser a Gibraltar, on van carregar manufactures angleses. Despr\u00e9s es va dirigir a Accra (Ghana). D\u2019all\u00e0, seguint ordres del representant de Josep Vidal i Ribas, va continuar cap a Aghwey, a l\u2019actual Ben\u00edn, on va lliurar part de la c\u00e0rrega a Dom\u00e8nec Mustich. I d\u2019all\u00e0 va continuar cap a Bahia, al Brasil. Els anglesos ja sospitaven que en aquest viatge s\u2019hi duien esclaus. A Bahia, la <em>Conchita<\/em> va carregar tabac i aiguardent i va anar cap a Whydah (actual Ouidah, Ben\u00edn), on va vendre el carregament a canvi d\u2019oli de palma. El 27 d\u2019agost, el vaixell va ser capturat per la marina brit\u00e0nica a Aghwey.<\/p>\n<p>Segons els informes brit\u00e0nics, la tripulaci\u00f3 va declarar que \u201cel vaixell havia d\u2019haver agafat c\u00e0rrega d\u2019esclaus tan bon punt haguessin descarregat les seves bodegues, i depenia totalment de no ser escorcollat de nou\u201d. Els oficials brit\u00e0nics sospitaven que el vaixell esperava carregar 400 persones per vendre-les a les col\u00f2nies americanes. El tribunal de Sierra Leone va condemnar el vaixell i va ordenar que s\u2019envi\u00e9s la tripulaci\u00f3 a les Illes Can\u00e0ries perqu\u00e8 la jutgessin les autoritats espanyoles \u2014cosa que no va passar: en arribar-hi, van ser alliberats \u2014.El cas va provocar una pres\u00e8ncia destacada a la premsa catalana, especialment al Diari de Barcelona, i espanyola, amb una defensa aferrissada del vaixell i l\u2019activitat dels armadors catalans i la petici\u00f3 de revisi\u00f3 dels termes del tractat amb el Regne Unit sobre la prohibici\u00f3 del tr\u00e0fic de persones.Els altres dos vaixells de la companyia, el Fernando Poo i el Mariana, tamb\u00e9 van ser capturats pels brit\u00e0nics. Hoy d\u00eda 22 de octubre de 1846, estando el falucho Bayhanosu capitan DBVR el 2\u00ba DGV, el 3\u00aa DMS en la latitud 5\u00ba 56\u2019 N y la longitud 10\u00ba 12\u2019 E del meridiano de C\u00e1diz y a las 8 de la ma\u00f1ana se avist\u00f3 un vapor de guerra ingl\u00e9s y d\u00eda de distancia 14 millas, viento NO y conocimos que nos perseguia. Todo el d\u00eda lo tuvimos a la vista, a las 6 de la tarde con poco viento estando dicho vapor a la distancia como dos millas fue cuando quebr\u00f3 la rueda de estribor y al cabo de 1 hora el viento nos favoreci\u00f3 y ayudados de la oscuridad pudimos escapar de tal inven-cible contrario.<\/p>\n<p>Com en els casos anteriors, aquest exvot \u00e9s una ofrena d\u2019un membre de la tripulaci\u00f3, Ventura Riera \u2014possiblement el capit\u00e0, per la coincid\u00e8ncia parcial de les inicials que figuren a la inscripci\u00f3 \u2014tot agraint la intercessi\u00f3 divina per lliurar-se de la persecuci\u00f3 del vapor de l\u2019armada anglesa <em>Hydra<\/em>, en aig\u00fces del golf de Guinea. L\u2019exvot procedeix de l\u2019ermita de la Cisa, a Vilassar de Mar.Tot i no comptar amb informaci\u00f3 tan extensa com en el cas dels altres dos exemples presentats, s\u00ed que podem aportar algunes dades sobre el vaixell i l\u2019episodi representat.<\/p>\n<p>El Bayhano va ser un vaixell constru\u00eft pel mestre d\u2019aixa Francesc Segarra, de Vilassar de mar (Barcelona), el 1846. Aquesta coincid\u00e8ncia cronol\u00f2gica entre la data de construcci\u00f3 del vaixell i l\u2019episodi representat a l\u2019exvot fa pensar que, ja d\u2019origen, l\u2019embarcaci\u00f3 es va dedicar al tr\u00e0fic de persones. L\u2019exactitud del que narra la llegenda de l\u2019exvot \u00e9s for\u00e7a ajustada, a m\u00e9s, coincideix amb el que recull el diari de navegaci\u00f3 del vapor angl\u00e8s <em>Hydra<\/em>, que protagonitz\u00e0 la persecuci\u00f3 en compliment dels acords subscrits durant el primer ter\u00e7 del segle XIX, entre Espanya i Gran Bretanya, per a la persecuci\u00f3 del tr\u00e0fic, declarat il\u00b7legal.
