12,5 milions de persones esclavitzades<\/h2>\n

Entre els segles XVI i XIX, m\u00e9s de 12,5 milions de persones nascudes a l\u2019\u00c0frica van ser embarcades cap al continent americ\u00e0. Espanya es va convertir en el quart pa\u00eds d\u2019un r\u00e0nquing macabre: els grans ports esclavistes del sud d\u2019Europa van ser Sevilla i Lisboa fins al segle XVII, i Cadis i Lisboa durant els segles XVIII i XIX. Es calcula que els vaixells dels armadors europeus o nord-americans van portar fins a l\u2019Am\u00e8rica espanyola unes 2.072.000 persones. D\u2019aquest total, els vaixells espanyols n\u2019haurien transportat aproximadament 1.600.000; d\u2019aquestes, gaireb\u00e9 1.000.000 van acabar esclavitzades a Cuba.<\/p>\n

El rapte de persones
a les factories africanes<\/h2>\n

El proc\u00e9s comen\u00e7ava amb el rapte o amb la guerra. Traficants locals o estrangers capturaven persones joves \u2014homes, dones i infants\u2014 i les traslladaven fins a la costa africana, on hi havia les factories: instal\u00b7lacions que comptaven amb una resid\u00e8ncia per al factor \u2014l\u2019encarregat\u2014i els seus treballadors, un magatzem de mercaderies i diversos barracons on eren retingudes i encadenades les persones capturades fins que eren venudes i embarcades.<\/p>\n

S\u2019han identificat 63 factories de propietaris espanyols, alguns d\u2019ells catalans. Van ser propietaris o administradors de factories a la costa africana els traficants catalans Jos\u00e9 de B\u00e9rriz, Francesc Canela, Pau Freixas Ribalta, Pere Manegat, Dom\u00e8nech Mustich, Pere Sala, Francesc Riera, Crist\u00f2fol Roig Vidal i Bonaventura Vidal Calzada.<\/p>\n

Objectes moneda<\/h2>\n

A l\u2019\u00c0frica subsahariana no s\u2019hi va introduir la moneda encunyada fins a temps relativament moderns, impulsada pels governs colonials. Per a l\u2019intercanvi comercial era molt habitual l\u2019\u00fas de diversos tipus d\u2019elements, com sal, teles, armes, petxines, metalls preciosos i objectes met\u00e0l\u00b7lics de tot tipus. Quan els catalans es van incorporar al tr\u00e0fic negrer, a Rio de la Plata a partir de 1789 i a Cuba, a partir de 1810, les transaccions se solien pagar amb plata amonedada, en cauris i en determinades mercaderies com teles, p\u00f3lvora i rifles.<\/p>\n

Manilles<\/h3>\n

Aquest tipus de manilles, generalment de coure o bronze, es fabricaven a Europa des de finals del segle XV, fonamentalment per comprar persones esclavitzades a la costa africana.<\/p>\n

Creus de Katanga<\/h3>\n

Un tipus molt com\u00fa de monedes congoleses van ser les creus de Katanga: lingots de coure o bronze fosos en forma d\u2019aspa, que van sobreviure fins a comen\u00e7aments del segle XX.<\/p>\n

Turmelleres<\/h3>\n

A la zona del Congo i del Zaire, les dones riques d\u2019alguns pobles utilitzaven unes grans turmelleres de bronze anomenades konga, que tamb\u00e9 havien servit com a moneda. Per a aquest segon \u00fas, se\u2019n fabricaven de diversos di\u00e0metres.<\/p>\n
