Un a\u00f1o m\u00e1s tarde, se fund\u00f3 la Liga Nacional de Barcelona, que se opon\u00eda a la abolici\u00f3n de la esclavitud en Puerto Rico. Pero queremos menos a\u00fan que se suma en la barbarie a los infelices a quienes se pretende favorecer, haciendo de la hermosa Cuba, de la bella Puerto Rico, dos tribus semejantes a la desdichada Santo Domingo(&#8230;) P\u00f3ngase un arma en manos de un ni\u00f1o y se herir\u00e1 con ella. Ni\u00f1o es el que ha vivido siempre bajo tutela y arma mort\u00edfera la libertad para quien no sabe hacer de tan precioso don el uso conveniente(&#8230;) Mucho se habla y mucho se desbarra [&#8230;] al tratar de esta delicada cuesti\u00f3n, porque se presta tanto a pomposas y altisonantes declamaciones [&#8230;]. Pero la verdad es que los que m\u00e1s declaman contra la mal llamada esclavitud de las Antillas, fil\u00e1ntropos de apariencia y cat\u00f3licos dedoubl\u00e9, tratan con m\u00e1s desp\u00f3tico desprecio a sus criados que los habitantes de Cuba y Puerto Rico a sus llamados esclavos (&#8230;) Adem\u00e1s, Excmo. En el a\u00f1o 1868 estall\u00f3 la Guerra de los Diez A\u00f1os, la primera guerra por la independencia de Cuba. Sin embargo, aquella primera constituci\u00f3n democr\u00e1tica no incluy\u00f3 la abolici\u00f3n de la esclavitud. Durante buena parte del siglo XIX, prevaleci\u00f3 el silencio, en parte por los intereses de la corona espa\u00f1ola en las plantaciones azucareras cubanas.  <\/p>\n<p>La Revoluci\u00f3n de 1868 revitaliz\u00f3 el movimiento abolicionista, y a\u00fan m\u00e1s, el fin de la esclavitud en los Estados Unidos de Am\u00e9rica tras la Guerra de Secesi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>En el a\u00f1o 1864 se cre\u00f3 la <strong>Sociedad Abolicionista Espa\u00f1ola<\/strong>, de la que formaron parte economistas y pol\u00edticos relevantes como Laure\u00e0 Figuerola, Joaquim Maria Sanrom\u00e0 y Francesc Pi i Margall, as\u00ed como otros dirigentes liberales como Salustiano de Ol\u00f3zaga, Segismundo Moret y Rafael Mar\u00eda Labra. Esta asociaci\u00f3n contaba tambi\u00e9n con una secci\u00f3n femenina, la Sociedad Abolicionista de Se\u00f1oras, presidida por la activista Carolina Coronado. <\/p>\n<p>Entre los abolicionistas catalanes hab\u00eda figuras como la m\u00fasica y feminista Clotilde Cerd\u00e0, el editor Antonio Bergnes de las Casas, as\u00ed como algunos pol\u00edticos y economistas relevantes. Adem\u00e1s de ser una arpista reconocida, Cerd\u00e0 era una activista a favor del feminismo y contraria tanto a la pena de muerte como a la esclavitud. Durante un viaje a Cuba, en el a\u00f1o 1876, defendi\u00f3 la abolici\u00f3n de la esclavitud.  <\/p>\n<p>Clotilde era hija de Clotilde Bosch, pintora, y de Ildefons Cerd\u00e0, ingeniero que dise\u00f1\u00f3 el Ensanche barcelon\u00e9s.
